What to do if you want to get out of the noisy city? Close to San José, I would recommend visiting Poas Volcano area. It is a wonderful destination where you can meet the rainforest and one of the most beautiful volcanoes of Costa Rica, Poas volcano. The ‘Poás Volcano’ is an active 2,708-metre (8,885 ft) stratovolcano. The crater of the volcano is over a mile across and 1050 feet deep. It has erupted 40 times since 1828, including April 2017 for the last time. However, since March 2019, the volcano is being dangerously active, so it has been closed to tourists. When the park will reopen, you will be able to enjoy the impressive main crater with its sulfur fumaroles, and hike on a trail to the beautiful Botos Lagoon. You will be impressed!
On your way to Doka Estate, you will pass throughout the city of Alajuela where you can have a stop and learn about the most famous Costa Rican war hero. Juan Santamaria is one of the most popular figures in Latin America. In Costa Rica, he is recognized as a national hero for his role in maintaining the country’s independence. Afterwards continue your trip through the coffee plantation towards Doka State, where you can learn the entire process of the coffee production and taste one of the most delicious coffees in the world. You definitely have to try the Peaberry coffee!
Continue to La Paz Waterfall after some cups of coffee. There is an important change in temperature and vegetation as you climb up these mountains, preparing you for the pleasure of the exuberant cloud forest. Discover La Paz Waterfall Gardens, it is a natural park where you will walk on very safe trails surrounded by forest and the most impressive waterfalls of the entire country. Also, you can visit the largest butterfly observatory in the country, the impressive hummingbird gallery, a safe serpentarium, the traditional old house, an exuberant aviary and the frog’s exhibition.
