Itinerary

Day 1Arrival to San Jose, Costa Rica

Costa Rica is all about nature, you can feel it in the purity of air the moment you land in this tropical country. Right after immigration and customs, one of our representatives will meet you at the airport exit. He will help you with the luggage and take you to the hotel that is arranged for the group. Lodging for tonight is in downtown San Jose, close to plazas, museums and many historical buildings.

During the drive, you will receive a brief introduction to Costa Rica and some recommendations for your trip. The guide will explain your itinerary in detail once you are at the hotel. Tonight you will enjoy dinner out of the hotel so you can explore a lively and cultural city.

Day 2Transfer San Jose to Tortuguero National Park

The best naturalist expedition awaits you today. Your expert guide will meet you early at the hotel. From San Jose you will start traveling northeast to the Caribbean lowlands. The first part of this journey will take you through the Braulio Carrillo National Park and then you will stop for breakfast at Guapiles, this will be your first contact with Costa Rican cuisine. After breakfast you will continue to La Pavona dock, there you will board the special designed boat that will take us to our hotel located in the Tortuguero National Park area.

This afternoon you will visit the Village of Tortuguero where you will visit the Turtle Museum and walk around town to learn about the relaxed way of life in the Caribbean of Costa Rica. Your guide will explain to you how this village developed and why they changed their mentality about the turtle conservation. You will return to the hotel after this interesting visit.

Day 3Tortuguero National Park exploration

This morning, after breakfast, you have a boat tour on the National Park with the company of a local naturalist guide. The small boats go deep into the canals of the National Park, further beyond where other boats can go. Due to the ability to explore further into the canals, you will have the opportunity to find rarer species of wildlife. The extensive network of freshwater creeks and lagoons behind the beaches of Tortuguero are home to seven species of river turtles, spectacled Caiman, southern River Otters, a number of crustaceans, and over 50 species of freshwater fish. On this expedition you are also likely to see Spider, Howler, and Capuchin Monkeys as well as dozens of other species of birds. If you are lucky you might even spot an endangered West Indian Manatee.

Lunch is included at the lodge. This afternoon your guide will take you to a private nature trail where you can find wildlife, the walk is relaxed and slow as this is a flat trail. The rest of the day is at your leisure; you can relax at the swimming pool, take a cocktail admiring the river lagoon or spend the afternoon on the beach.

Day 4Transfer Tortuguero to Arenal Volcano area, Visit Pierella butterflies farm on the way

Today after breakfast, we will meet at the main dock of the hotel to return by boat to Pavona’s dock; from there we will continue with land transportation to Guapiles where you will have another delicious Caribbean lunch. After the meal, your private guide will take you to the next destination of this expedition, the impressive Arenal volcano but on route, you will visit a very special farm that is dedicated to the butterflies’ production to export.

At Pierella Ecological Gardens and Farm you can see the entire cycle of life of butterflies, your guide will explain the different stages of their life including the transmutation from caterpillar to those beautiful and colorful flying insects. They keep a large population of native species including the genus Morpho, Caligo and Heliconius. The garden is not just butterflies as there are many other things to see and do; while you explore the trail you can also observe other interesting species of insects, some of these mimic the environment like the “juanpalo” (stick insect), praying mantises and incredible species of leaf katydids.

In addition, you will find special ponds where you can observe three species of exotic frogs: poisonous red frog, poisonous green frog with black and red-eyed tree frog. Different species of birds like to visit the farm to get some fruit and insects. Here you can also meet the two species of sloths as some of them decided to take the place as their home. The trails are also accessible for a baby carriage or wheelchair.

After the interesting visit the group will continue traveling north; towards the Arenal Volcano where a comfortable and conveniently located hotel await for you, arrival by the end of the day. The evening is free to rest or enjoy the hotel facilities. Dinner is included at a local restaurant; the hotel is half a mile from La Fortuna Village.

Day 5Arenal volcano area, visit to a local school and natural hot springs by night

This morning we have a special intercultural exchange activity planned for you. Your guide will take you to a rural community to visit their school and interact with local students; the group will bring a special donation that will be given directly to students while they show the school and the town. Your guide will organize different activities on which the foreign and locals will share and learn from each other, everyone will learn traditional games of Costa Rica and North America. Lunch will take place at the school, it will be prepare by a local association of women.

The Arenal Volcano area is well known by its natural hot springs complexes; this afternoon you will visit one of the biggest hot springs resort where you will find several swimming pools, some for adults and other destined for youths and children. You will find long and funny slides that will bring up the adrenaline rush; for adults a large swimming pool with a wet bar is the perfect spot to relax and enjoy the amazing views of the Arenal volcano. A delicious buffet dinner is included after the water activity.

Day 6Transfer Arenal Volcano to Monteverde

Today you will travel to meet the inspiring Cloud Forest. We will take you on the Jeep-Boat-Jeep across the Arenal Lake to get to Monteverde. You can enjoy spectacular views of the volcano and find different species of birds while you navigate the tranquil lake. Our staff will point out the birds and other animals you may see.

Monteverde has one of the most important protected cloud forests found in the world. There are just a few of these forests therefore it is very important to conserve the unique plants and animals found around. You will have the opportunity to explore the forest but also get to know the friendly locals who enjoy living in harmony with Mother Nature.

By mid-afternoon, we will take you to a private property where an interesting cultural activity will take place. The main goal of this activity is to see how a real “Trapiche” works. The tour begins with a short walk through the farm where you can get a glimpse of different plantations like sugar cane, coffee, bananas, plantains, tubers, oranges and more. The entire coffee production process is explained during the second part of this activity and then you will continue with a ride on an authentic Costa Rican oxcart. Afterwards experience the process of making liquor with the sugar cane, this is the traditional drink of Costa Rica named “guaro”. To finish, delight yourself with a fragrant cup of the locally produced coffee.

Day 7Hanging Bridges at Monteverde Cloud Forest

Today you will explore the wonderful Cloud Forest accompanied by the expert tour guide. Departure from the hotel is early so you will have more opportunities to see wildlife, your guide will take you to Selvatura’s hanging bridges where you can admire the forest from the ground and from above.

You will walk on eight different bridges with various lengths ranging between 150 feet up to 510 feet and altitudes ranging between 36 feet up to 180 feet. Each bridge is five feet width and have a capacity of up to 80 people per bridge making them both the longest and strongest bridge systems in the Monteverde Cloud Forest. The Tree Top Walkways are suitable for people of all ages and the duration of the hike is about 2 hours. During the walk you can see different species of wildlife including some of the most beautiful birds of Central America, the Quetzal is for sure the main actor here but other elegant birds you can find here are hummingbirds, owls, bell-bird and other species of Trogons. Of course your guide will have all the necessary equipment to get a close look of these birds.

During the afternoon you will visit the village of Santa Elena where you will find friendly people who is open to interact with travelers, you can get a delicious ice cream from the local factory and enjoy it at the public park. Tonight you will enjoy a fine Italian dinner at one of the best restaurants in town.

Day 8Zip line tour in the morning then transportation to San Jose

Today you will travel back to civilization but you still have the morning to enjoy the enchanting cloud forest. You will enjoy a “flight” over the forest before you leave towards the city, zip-line. The canopy, as it is called locally, consists of gliding between trees and mountains via wires and a harness specially designed for it. While you “fly” through the dense cloud forest you can see and feel all the natural activity occurring within the treetops. Birds, insects and some other mammals are easy to see with the help of your guides. Don’t forget your camera so you can capture the amazing views of the cloud forest.

After noon the group will depart towards the city which it is only 3 hours away. The hotel for tonight is located in downtown San Jose, this afternoon you can explore the city, visit museums and historical buildings with your guide; the central avenue is a place where you can interact with locals and learn a little about our way of living and the meaning of “Pura Vida”.

Farewell dinner included at a local restaurant.

Day 9Departure Costa Rica

Today you will say good-bye to the beautiful Costa Rica and its people as it is time to travel back home and reunite with family and friends. One of our drivers will pick you up at the hotel and take you straight to the International Airport, located just 30 minutes from the hotel. In Costa Rica you must be at the airport 3 hours prior the departure time.
